Tattooing should be a fun and enjoyable experience that enhances your life not curse it. We believe it is essential we take certain precautions to ensure our clients receive the very best in sterilization. Our policies might seem a little "strict", ultimately these policies are in place to keep everyone safe and happy. The following is our list of policies and standards related to Tattooing Sterilization Process.

Water treatment Reverse Osmosis®
All water in the sterilization room is treated by Reverse Osmosis, also known as Hyper-filtration by the industry. This represents state-of-the-art in water treatment technology. Reverse Osmosis (RO) was developed in the late 1950's under U.S. Government funding, as a method of desalinating sea water. Today reverse osmosis has earned its name as the most convenient and thorough method to filter water. It is used by most water bottling plants, and by many industries that require ultra-refined water in manufacturing.
UV Light added extra protection
UV disinfection system that effectively destroys virtually all illnesses-causing microorganisms including E. coli bacteria, Giardia parasites, and swine/avian flu viruses without affecting the taste and odor of the water.
The primary usage for a UV light is to disinfect filtered water at a certain flow rate. Effectively it destroys virtually all illnesses-causing microorganisms including E. coli bacteria, Giardia parasites, and swine/avian flu viruses without affecting the taste and odor of the water by the UV interfering with the DNA and RNA in the organisms' reproductive cycles.
In theory, the reverse osmosis membrane already removes bacteria and viruses from the water, therefore our municipal water system (tap water) in the U.S., chances are we don’t need a UV light on top of RO System. But we wanted to have extra protection, so we add an UV as an additional stage to disinfect our water.
A new wave breakthrough provides 99% pure fresh water. To protect our clients and Autoclaves we use only pure fresh water in our shop. The distiller allows us from not using tap water, risking damage to our equipment. Our water distiller is a patented distillation technology. It kills harmful bacteria and viruses by flash vaporizing water and then reconstituting it through condensation. The result is water that's 99% pure.
Our distiller purifies soft or hard water from any source including those that are spring fed or municipally piped. Simply plug it into any outlet, fill with tap water and switch on. Safely and effectively it will remove lead, copper, aluminum, arsenic, iron, nitrates, herbicides, pesticides, PCBs and more! We have all the fresh water we need.
What gets sterilized
For Tattooing we sterilize tubes, needles and any other tattoo related instruments.
Prior to being placed in the autoclave, the instruments are soaked in a hospital grade disinfectant then rinsed off, the instruments are then placed in a ultrasonic cleaner which removes any stubborn matter then rinsed again. Tattooing instruments are then placed in sterile bag before being placed in the autoclave (the best form of sterilization available).
We use single use needles in Tattooing which are opened in front of the client and are disposed of immediately after use into a medical sharps container. These procedures combined, ensure you a safe, clean tattoo experience.
All employees are trained in universal precautions as to protect both themselves, and their clientele from the spread of disease.
An autoclave is the same device used by hospitals, doctors and dentists to sterilize equipment. Autoclave sterilization is the only way to ensure that all equipment is properly sterilized and safe to use on you.
Autoclaves achieve sterilization through the use of intense steam-heat and pressure over an extended period of time. Items such as dry heat sterilizers, chemical solutions, boiling and alcohol do not achieve appropriate levels of sterilization. Any autoclave being used for tattooing should be tested by an independent lab (this is called a spore test) at least monthly. We spore test our autoclaves monthly.
In addition, we use a combination of package indicators (which react to heat exposure). Before ever being tattooed, you should ask the tattoo artist to see the autoclave along with all spore test results.
WHAT IS SPORE TESTING?
Spore testing (biological sterilizer monitoring) works on the scientific theory that if the sterilization equipment kills the viable non-pathogenic microorganisms contained on each test strip, then it is capable of killing the weaker yet dangerous blood borne pathogens, such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis B (HBV) that may be present on the instrumentation being sterilized. The spores used, Geobacillus, Stearothermophilus and Bacillus Atrophaeus, are harmless to humans, however they are difficult to kill via sterilization. These biological indicators serve as the industry standard determinant of sterilization equipment and procedural ability to achieve complete efficacy.
Blue Star Tattoos Inc. independent lab for spore testing is North Bay Bioscience, LLC.
Blue Star Tattoos In. is Contra Costa County Health Department Registered.
