Most body jewelry on the market today is not safe in material or design, Most jewelers and jewelry companies have no piercing experience and so do not understand the specifications required to achieve the best results, We at Blue Star Tattoos Inc. have our own standard and demand the best from our suppliers, so you are always assured of the highest quality. Our standard while impossible to discuss all design and material issues here, some very basic and essential standards apply to 100% of the jewelry we sell. While we think of the following points as simple common sense, many producers and retailers of piercing jewelry do not adhere to these basics. These materials have been shown, either through scientific research or years of practical experience, to be very friendly (biocompatible) to the human body. We have on file mill certificates from each of our manufacturers, showing that the materials they are using have passed testing and certification for being implant-grade. These mill certificates show us that the jewelry we are purchasing is made of the appropriate materials, so that we know we are providing a safe product to our clients. Without these certificates, we would simply have to take the word of manufacturers that they were selling a safe product. Piercing jewelry is not regulated like medical devices or other products used in your body. This means that most piercing jewelry on the market today is not tested or regulated in any way. Blue Star Tattoos Inc. chooses to promote only safest materials approved by the APP to achieve the best possible results with any piercing.
The following are some of the criteria we use when selecting our jewelry: Implant-Grade Implant-Grade
We limit what materials we will use in a new piercing to the following materials: 316LVM ASTM F-138 Stainless Steel These materials have been shown, either through scientific research or years of practical experience, to be very friendly (biocompatible) to the human body. Any retailer providing you with stainless steel, titanium, and niobium body jewelry should have access to” Mill Certificates” or “Mill Spec” from the manufacturer of that product. The certificate details the particular grade of the metal. If a body jewelry supplier is not familiar with this, then they are not keeping up with important information that is available in the piercing field. Blue Star Tattoos Inc. only carries jewelry from manufacturer that can supply us with Mill Spec, so we can ASSURED that our jewelry is made from the proper grade of metal. Keeping our goal to carry the safest body jewelry. These are the same metals used in medical application such as hip or knee replacement and bone pins. It is frequently claimed that the cheaper jewelry is “implant Grade” but this is often not the case. If you are going to shop elsewhere, ask to see the Mill Spec. Even if they can’t tell the difference between good and bad, your body will, don’t find out the hard way. Stay away from cheap jewelry. Polish
Jewelry that has a "dull" or gray appearance to it, has not been thoroughly polished, and should not be worn in a fresh piercing. This type of jewelry may be irritating to healed piercing also. The most important part of the jewelry is the finish, it is vital that the jewelry have a mirror finish, a high shine super-smooth surface. Body jewelry that has any nicks, burrs, tooling marks or scratches can cause severe complication with healing. A poor finish can result in trauma to the wound, delayed healing, and a build up of scar tissue. A rough or porous surface can introduce bacteria into the wound and cause infection. Cheap jewelry seldom has the same quality finish as high quality, more expensive body jewelry does. Even on a healed piercing, jewelry with rough finish can cause irritation, skin damage and complications. Internally Threaded
Using jewelry threaded in this fashion means that no rough threads pass through your fresh piercing. Obviously, this could be very painful as well as traumatic to your new piercing. Externally threaded jewelry (female ball and male shaft), the opposite style of jewelry we use, can often cause pain and trauma when inserted into a fresh piercing. In addition, internally threaded jewelry generally has more threads on the ball and shaft, making it less likely you will lose a ball. However, anytime you are wearing threaded jewelry, it is important to check the tightness of the balls once or twice per day to ensure they stay on tight. Movement and friction throughout the day can cause the balls to loosen. Another advantage of internally threaded jewelry is interchangeability. Most of the manufacturers who produce internally threaded jewelry have agreed to all use the same sizes of threads for the various gauges of jewelry. Therefore, while each gauge may have different size threads, the threaded end from one company will fit a barbell from a different company. This means that you will not be required to purchase a whole new piece of jewelry, just because you want a certain end from one company when your barbell may be from another company. There is very little interchangeability between companies who produce externally threaded jewelry. you never need to put threads through your piercing.
Externally threaded jewelry (which have no use in body piercing) has threads on the post, and they must passed through the piercing to insert and remove the jewelry most often damaging the skin every time you take it in and out, I describe it like this to people, it’s like taking a hacksaw to your shin the threads move back and forth causing a lot of trauma. You don’t have to be a rocket science to realize that internally threaded jewelry is the way to go. It is much more sophisticated and expensive to manufacture internally tapped jewelry; therefore the end product does cost more. But again, it is well worth the extra expense to avoid having to pass threads (the hacksaw) through your body. Also, due to longer threading and greater thread count, internally threaded balls old more securely. If I had a dime for every time people came in with a lost ball I’d be a millionaire.
Annealing Annealing is a process whereby jewelry is superheated and cooled in a controlled environment. This causes a "softening" of the jewelry, making the jewelry easier to manipulate. This is especially important in the case of captive bead rings, as it becomes much easier to open and close the ring for the purpose of insertion or removal.. Except for large-gauge pieces of jewelry, annealed jewelry usually requires no tools to manipulate. As a result, there is a much smaller chance of scratching or damaging the jewelry than if tools have to be used. In addition, annealing is an important step needed to make certain materials meet the requirements for being an implant-grade material. Much of the poor quality body jewelry in not annealed. This is a heat treatment that makes jewelry pliable enough to work with easily, and it restores the metal to its molecular structure. If you cannot easily bend the ring up to 14 gauge or so with your fingers, then it is not annealed. It is also significantly harder to take such jewelry in and out and to insert and remove beads from captive rings. This can necessitate the use of tools, which could scratch and damage jewelry and unnecessarily complicate jewelry insertion and removal. Other metals should be avoided because the are not meant to be worn in the body because of HIGH REACTIVIY this including sterling silver , copper, aluminum and any gold plating, this is poor jewelry and can result in a variety of adverse reactions including allergies, infections, and rejected piercing. Other material options, various Exotic Hardwoods, Natural bone and horn, blown glass, Pyrex®, natural stone and more. Your Body Knows the Difference
